USA have finished their first day at the PanAm Games in the first subdivision of the Team Finals/Qualifications. They started the competition on floor where they posted four solids routines: a 14.650/6.2 from Desch, a 14.300/5.7 from Hundley and a 13.750/5.5 from Schild with Skaggs’ 13.400/5.5 being discarded. Vault was by far their best scoring event, with four DTYs between 14.900 (Skaggs) and 15.100 (Hundley). On bars they retained three solid scores in the mid and high 14’s, with Rachel Gowey’s 14.750/6.3 being their top score. Rachel, who only competed two events, was also the highest scorer on balance beam, with a 14.500/5.9. On this event, Madison Desch’s score was discarded, after a fall on a very difficult skill, the layout full (13.250/5.8).

Three US gymnasts competed on all four events, with Madison Desch (57.300) and Amelia Hundley (57.650) advancing further to the all around competition. Per event, the top two US competitors advancing further in the event finals were: on floor Madison Desch and Amelia Hundley; on uneven bars – Rachel Gowey and Amelia Hundley; on balance beam Rachel Gowey and Megan Skaggs. No US gymnasts competed two different vaults to try and qualify for the vault final.
USA Results:
In the same subdivision, team Mexico finished with a total of 158.500 (17 points behind the US). The highlights for this team were Ana Lago’s all around performance (53.350 points) and the bars rotation with good routines from Elsa Garcia (13.600) and Ahtziri Sandoval (13.800).
Yamilet Pena Abreu, an individual representative of her country, the Dominican Republic, is currently leading qualifications on vault after managing to land her Produnova vault. The landing was very low, almost having her buttocks touching the floor; nonetheless it was good enough for Yamilet to manage to hold it on her feet. She scored a 15.100 for this vault and a 13.900/5.3 for her second.
