The annual Elite Canada competition is currently underway in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This evening (February 3rd), the senior All-Around Final afforded us the first look of the season at some of Canada’s top competitors.

Jade Chrobok of GEM won the title with a total score of 52.917. Placing her highest scores on vault and balance beam, the first-year senior from Toronto, Ontario confirmed that the excitement surrounding her (senior) debut was well-founded. Last year, she placed first on everything but uneven bars (where she placed second) in the Elite Canada junior division.

Chrobok was followed by fellow first-year seniors Megan Phillips and Brooklyn Moors, who scored 51.100, and 50.550, respectively. (Moors also placed the highest score of the competition on floor exercise–a 13.500/5.1 D.)

Placing fourth through sixth were 2016 Olympic Team Alternate Megan Roberts (50.100), 2015 World Team Member Audrey Rousseau (50.067) and 2016 Olympian Shallon Olsen (49.617). Roberts had rough outings on bars and beam, but threw some big tumbling on floor (Double Arabian piked, piked full-in, double tuck, and double pike) for a 13.2, and was one of three athletes to score above 14 on vault. Rousseau placed her highest scores on vault and floor exercise (opening with a full-out) and Olsen also placed her highest scores on vault  (DTY) and floor, which would have been higher if it weren’t for a barely saved landing on her third pass, a full-in. She opened with a double-twisting double and dismounted with a triple twist.

2016 Olympian Rose Kaying-Woo only competed on balance beam, where she scored a 13.350/5.4 D after a solid front tuck, nice BHS to layout, round-off to double pike dismount, and some minor breaks and form issues.

Two-time Olympian and University of Georgia student athlete Brittany Rogers had a difficult competition, scoring a 12.6 (only 4.3 difficulty value) on beam and a 9.8 on bars with a series of falls.

Competition continues tomorrow with the junior and novice All Around Finals, and on Sunday with Event Finals.
