Simone won with 57.491 points. This will be a much debated victory, but ultimately deserved, despite the two falls. Simone stared with a fall on the Biles on vault (14.533/6.4). On bars she hit a solid set with good execution and her characteristic sky-high double double dismount. On beam she fell on Barani at the beginning of the routine, the flick -loso-loso series went well but then she wobbled again on the punch front. Simone’s score was 13.322 enough to keep her in contention for gold, before the last event. On floor Simone looked great (OOB on Moors aside) and earned a massive 15.0/6.6.

After the medal ceremony Simone said she almost wished someone else had won: “It doesn’t show who I am” visibly disappointed in her performance. “I kinda hoped it didn’t turn out the way it did (…) I feel like the girls worked so hard and they deserved it a little bit better than me because it depends on how good you do that day and today wasn’t my best.”

Mai Murakami had one of her best all around performances ever: great DTY for 14.533, followed by a solid bars set (13.566). On beam she demonstrated excellent control with a wobble free routine that ended with a double back pike and a hop back, the biggest visible error of the entire routine (13.666). Mai started floor with a quad turn she stumbled out of but then she hit all her amazingly difficult tumbling (double double. double layout. 2 1/2 to front full). She received a 14.0 for her floor and a total of 55.798 in the all around.

Morgan Hurd place 3rd with a 55.732. She started with what looked like her best DTY of this competition (14.600). Morgan hit her bars routine for 14.333. On beam she had her only major mistake, grabbing the beam after a side aerial. She also had a big wobble on the standing full but the rest of the routine went fairly well and the score was not bad considering the circumstances – 12.933. Morgan finished the competition in a fierce manner with one of the best floor routines of the year, rewarded with a 13.866.

Nina Derwael placed 4th with 55.699, after an amazing bars routine (15.100) and pretty perfect executions across the rest of the events, despite lower difficulty.

Angelina Melnikova was 5th with a total of 55.698 (.001 behind Derwael and .033 behind 3rd place). She did not have major errors and showed a more even level of complexity across the 4 events.

Melanie de Jesus dos Santos came in 6th with a 55.599 ( less than 2 tenths away from the podium!) after the solid performance across the 4 events she had been looking for at the 2018 Worlds.

Chen Yile placed 7th with a total of 54.632; she had beautiful performances on beam and bars but was held back by her lower difficulty on vault and floor.

Flavia Saraiva finished 8th with 54.366; she had good performances on vault and floor and one of her better routines on bars. Flavia fell on beam on the flick loso loso series.
