English Championships: Best Routines

The gymnasts of England were out in full force to kick off the 2015 season at the English Championships this week (Loughborough University 14-15 March). There were quite a few pleasant surprises as gymnasts tried out new routines and choreography; for many, the road to 2015 Euros starts here and any chance to impress and earn a spot for upcoming 2015 European championships is important.

Given that there were tested many upgrades and that it’s early season, there were quite a few mistakes, so overall scores will not impress. As per the elements and new routines shown – this was an interesting preview of what Team GB could offer in 2015 and on.

Mahesh, our new contributor, handpicked ten of his favourite routines and he believes you should check them out too:

10 – Claudia Fragapange – uneven bars

Fragapane impressed in Loughborough with overall good routines. She shook off her disappointing performance at American Cup. On bars she hit her upgraded set, making all her connections and having perhaps the straightest double layout dismount of the competition.

9 – Amy Tinkler – uneven bars

Tinkler has worked hard on this event to increase her difficulty. She seemed to put the crowd in a dreamlike state as she swung with ease right to a stuck landing.

8 Catherine Lyons – floor exercise

It was a shame for that fall right as the routine was taking off. But even with a fall, Lyons makes her innovative floor routine a spectacle to behold. I think the judges were bummed they couldn’t give extra artistry points.

7 Claudia Fragapane – floor

This is the second time she has competed her new routine – the first time at the American Cup the week before. Despite going out of bounds on three of her passes, this was an improvement. Let’s hope this little gymnast with a big personality can master her new routine by Euros, to finally make it justice. By the looks of it she’s definitely going in the right direction.

6 Tyesha Mattis – uneven bars

Tyesha Mattis unleashed a sharp and aggressive bar set, making impressive combinations that showed off her power and precision. The combos are so unexpected and fast that you will probably hit the replay button.

5 Kelly Simm – uneven bars

Simm’s new combination made us second guess if she was on the uneven bars or the men’s high bar. To be fair she loses a bit of the crazy speed but because a Ray to Tkachev is so rare, we should be all right with that:

4 Amy Tinkler floor

Amy wowed with one of the most difficult floor routine of the meet. She managed to make it look playful, even. This routine helped her finish 1st for the AA English title.

3 Tyesha Mattis -balance beam

Despite her fall, Mattis showed great potential on beam. The  layout stepout series was as perfect as they get and the fall on the full back tuck looked like a fluke.

2 Beckie Downie – uneven bars

Beckie Downie spoiled us as she (seemingly) comfortably performed her dynamic and original bar set, she even tossed in a few upgrades to the already jam-packed routine. We say seemingly because before the competition she took to social media to express her true feelings for her routine”Argggfghhhhh this new bar routine is so frustrating !!!!! So close yet so far () it’s driving me mad()” (via Gymnastics Coaching)

1 Lisa Mason – floor exercise

(With a special mention for the choreography.) Mason unveiled a stunning floor routine she choreographed herself. This is a gymnast who once bested Khorkina on this event. So many years after, it’s great to see she’s still earning the highest floor score in a meet. Her routine was an excellent blend of good tumbling (she can upgrade too),  accompanied by compelling choreography.
