Today’s junior all-around competition has given us a preview into what British Gymnastics next generation, from Rio Olympics on.It seems this programme will continue to climb up the international gymnastics ladder in the years to come.
Unsurprisingly, the all-around crown went to Catherine Lyons who put on a consistent performance with complex routines to ensure she took the title with a total score of 55.600.
Lyons, who is the current junior European champion on floor, qualified to all four event finals on Sunday, with top spot on beam and floor and second on vault and bars. Her highlight of the day was her floor where she scored a 14.200 with a new (ish) routine. It’s not exactly new to Catherine because this has the same music she used for her well known level 4 compulsory exercise.
Catherine Lyons – Floor:
First year junior Maisie Methuen, who scored a total of 52.800, finished second.
The Welsh rising star, who won the Espoir British Championships back in December, qualified in top spot on vault where she performed a front handspring – pike front for her first vault and a front handspring pike front half out for her second to score an average of 13.950.
Like Lyons, Methuen qualified to all four event finals, and she was third on bars, beam and floor.
Maisie Methuen – Beam:
Third place finisher, Georgia-Mae Fenton, qualified in top spot for the bars final where she scored a 13.750.
Fenton, who is a former team mate of Catherine Lyons and recently moved from Europa to East London Gymnastics Club, also qualified seventh for the floor final. She also place ninth on beam just missing out on the final after an uncharacteristic error on her flight series.
Georgia-Mae Fenton – Beam:
Scottish prodigy Louise McColgan, placed fourth in the all-around and is another gymnast who has qualified to all four event finals.
McColgan debuted new skills on floor including a full twisting double pike, a triple twist and a double pike dismount. She scored 13.150 to place second behind Catherine Lyons. She also showed off a new double tuck back dismount on the balance beam where she placed eighth after falling on a Memmel turn and a few balance checks.
Louise also placed sixth on vault and fifth on bars.
