This week in NCAA gymnastics, Florida showed the first chink in their armor, an UCLA gymnast went viral, and an old favorite has regained their place at the top of the rankings.
For the first time in a long time (and the first time this season), Florida experienced an uncharacteristic loss against Georgia. For Florida, the pressure is clearly mounting, with being nearly undefeated and the added pressure of being the reigning NCAA champions, everyone is chasing them. The pressure on Florida was tangible. In the fourth rotation, Florida was up slightly, despite small, uncharacteristic mistakes from normally solid performers. Bridget Sloan only put up a 9.525, which meant the Gators had to count a 9.675 on floor from Ashley Hiller.
Despite these errors, Florida was still ahead going into rotation four by .900 However, Florida cracked under the pressure and Georgia took the lead and won the meet by .05. The beam did not treat the gators well. It started when Kennedy Baker, normally incredibly consistent, fell in her routine. It didn’t go any better when Alicia Boren put her hands down on her round-off double back dismount. Georgia had a solid floor rotation with three 9.95’s from Mary Beth Box, Brittany Rogers and GiGi Marino. Georgia was able to drop Brandie Jay’s 9.8 on floor when she went out of bounds. Florida scored their lowest score of the entire season, 196.350 to Georgia’s 196.400. This dropped them to second in the rankings with a 197.220 average.
While UCLA had issues in their Monday meet against Cal, they came back in true UCLA fashion to defeat Utah at home in Pauley Pavillion. UCLA Senior, Sophina DeJesus earned a 9.925 on her floor routine, which spread like wildfire online, due to DeJesus’s energetic dance and clean, beautiful tumbling. Utah was leading UCLA up to the final rotation, where Utah was leading by 0.275. However, UCLA had a strong floor line up, counting scores of 9.825 or higher. Angi Cipra landed the highest score of the night; a 9.975 on her floor routine and Madison Preston and Sophina DeJesus both earned 9.925’s for the Bruins. Preston also made her first appearance on beam for the Bruins, earning a solid 9.775. While Utah was dominant in their first three events, some small wobbles on beam here and there added up quickly and cost the Utes the win. Utah still maintains it’s 6th spot just ahead of UCLA in 7th.
Oklahoma had a busy weekend, first in a quad meet on Friday night against Auburn, Texas Women’s University and Illinois State, in which Oklahoma scored a season high of 197.925, with a 10.00 from junior Chayse Capps on balance beam. On Sunday, the Sooners were back in Norman for a home meet against West Virginia, where they scored a win of 197.9, increasing their average to a 197.393 to put them at the top of the rankings. The Sooners have been steadily improving every week, gaining consistency and strengths in the line-ups as the season continues. Their eye is on the prize, that coveted NCAA title that just barely escaped them last year.
Denver scored another season high of 196.675 at their home meet against Utah State boosting them to 12th in the rankings ahead of Stanford in 13th . Additionally, the Pioneers scored season highs on bars, beam and floor, and maintained steady composure throughout the competition. On bars, Denver counted scores of all 9.8 and above, only dropping Katie Menhinick’s 9.75. Beam, which is a source of contention to many teams, Denver conquered the beam. They managed to absorb a 9.475 from Diana Chesnok. Aside from the usual solid stellar performances of Nina McGee (who scored big on bars and floor and hit 39.6 in the all-around), Julia Ross provided top scores on bars and beam, with huge difficulty, including a Gienger to Pak salto and a clean, stuck double layout dismount on bars and superb flexibility with a perfectly extended front aerial to back handspring. On floor, Maggie Laughlin returned from being sidelined due to injury to contribute a 9.8. Utah State scored a season high on floor with a 49.075. Bailey McIntire anchored the floor rotation for Utah State with a 9.825, showing a difficult full in opening pass.
LSU scored another season high, breaking the 197 mark with a 197.425 in their home meet against Arkansas. In the past few weeks, they’d had issues with falls on beam, but they kept it together and scored above 49.2 on all four events. Sarah Finnegan had her second week in the all-around; she had an issue on beam, and had a fall on bars this week, which the Tigers were able to drop. Myia Hambrick scored a season high in the all-around with a 39.625, with scores of 9.9 and above on bars, beam and floor.
Despite issues on bars and beam at their home meet against Oregon State, Washington did pull off a season high on the floor with a 49.1. Allison Northey scored a season high on floor with a 9.9. Joslyn Goings provided some much needed consistency for Washington in the all-around, especially on bars and beam, where they had to count uncharacteristic falls. Oregon State put up a season high on beam with a 49.200, Maddie Gardiner put up the highest score on beam with a 9.9. Oregon State had issues on bars and floor, obviously hurting from the lack of depth due to injuries and loosing stellar performers after graduation.
Mostly, the teams have been steadily improving their scores as the post-season draws closer and closer week by week. Consistency is still the name of the game. We should see teams improving on their scores this week and maintaining a good level of consistency to boost their standings in the rankings. Scores are still counted by average, so the teams have a couple of weeks still until the RQS will be counted.
This weekend, Florida will be back at home to host Arkansas. They’ll be looking to pretend that the mess at Georgia never happened. Expect some angry beam from the Gators. Arkansas has been steadily gaining speed and they have inched their way into the top ten this week. If they overtake Florida, it will be with their stellar consistency.
Denver and Oklahoma will join George Washington and Utah State for the Perfect 10 challenge in Oklahoma City, Friday Feb 12. This will count as an away meet for all teams attending. Saturday, LSU will go to Georgia this week, expect a high level of competition as Georgia, despite having issues with beam, has been steadily improving week by week. LSU having conquered the beam, should put up a good fight. Utah is back at home to host Washington and hopefully, Washington has decided to apply some serious denial to Monday’s disaster. Alabama will be at Auburn Friday and return home Sunday to host West Virginia. UCLA will host Oregon State and Michigan hosts Michigan State after breaking 197 in their tri meet against Maryland and Eastern Michigan Monday night.
