Brazilian star Flavia Saraiva and Uzbekistan’s Oksana Chusovitina arm in arm kick started the 2016 Elite season. Of course, this was not the first elite competition of the year (Elite Canada, WOGA Classic and Nadia’s Invitational preceded it) but it is the first one with good TV/ youtube coverage and results readily available. [Later Edit: Cordelia pointed that this is not accurate since Elite Canada was streamed live and the results were available immediately]
Saraiva was hands down the star of the qualifications with the highest score of all the WAG qualifications, on balance beam: 15.15/6.5. The routine she presented is very ambitious with great variety of skills and complexity in combos: bhs-layout step out – layout step out, round-off to layout to two feet, switch ring leap, aerial walkover to aerial walkover to side somi, double pike dismount. The execution is exquisite, Saraiva is not holding back on any of the skills and the only time her foot came up was on a front tuck:
Flavia also debuted her floor routine. It is indeed a very happy and engaging routine full of energy and potential of producing that explosion among the crowd on a big arena. The musical arrangement, for me, is a bit of an over-kill, with three different songs mixed in just one minute and thirty seconds. The 2014/2015 routine seemed more coherent, right? (here at the 2015 PanAms). But the presentation was as great as ever and her tumbling was really good too (she is not the most consistent tumbler): full in stuck, tiny steps on 2 1/2 twist and on the double pike and stuck double back tuck to finish:
Flavia managed to hit her bars routine too: pike Jaeger, pike Tkachev, Tkachev to Pak transition to the low bar, clear hip circle, toe-on shoot to high bar, toe on full, full in dismount. There were some obvious deductions on handstands but her toe-point is so great on this event:
But the top qualifier on this event was Germany’s Lina Philipp, a 2016 senior. While a video of her Baku performance is not available online, we can see here in a video from November 2015 how she continues is a really good bars worker, something we have come to expect from the German gymnasts:
Oksana Chusovitina qualified first for the vault final with a handspring full and a Tsuk 1 1/2 as a second vault. Both vaults were well executed but we have seen even bigger and more controlled Tsukaharas 1 1/2 from her so she will be looking to improve in the finals:
Here are the results:
