As per our yesterday’s introduction, the Commonwealth Games have a slightly different format from what we are used to at major gymnastics competitions: the team final/qualifying round are separated into two days, with each team competing on vault and bars in the first day, and on beam and floor in the second.

In the team event, the rankings after the first day were saw favorite England at the top though perhaps not by the safe margin expected, after mistakes on their strongest apparatus, the uneven bars. Australia followed, next were Wales on 3rd and Canada on 4th after a disastrous bars rotation.

In the 2nd day the rankings did not change at the top: the team from England “won” both events. Floor was their stronger event with three performances in the top 8 from Fragapane, Harrold and Whelan.  Claudia Fragapane was the star of the 2nd day for England posting the best routines on both beam and floor. On the latter she managed to match her huge score from Europeans – 14.733.

Australia maintained 2nd position through standout performances by Lauren Mitchell – 2nd best score of the day on both events. Team mates Mary Anne Monckton and Olivia Vivian managed to deliver solid scores on beam and floor respectively, but overall the team total hurt a bit through the lack of a 3rd competitive routine per event and lost important points in the fight for the gold medal.

The Welsh team managed to retain their bronze medal position through consistency and outstanding performances from leader Lizzie Beddoe. She  contributed again a great deal managing to score in the top eight on both events; Lizzie is now qualified for four individual finals: bars, beam, floor and all around (the last on 4th place).

Team Canada finished roughly half a point behind Wales, on 4th place. Although the team outperformed both Australia and Wales on floor and had the 3rd highest total on beam (better than Wales), the gap “inherited” after the first two pieces of apparatus of the 1st day proved too big. Ellie Black continued to look strong both on beam and floor, qualifying into both event finals. She will also be a strong opponent for Claudia Fragapane for tomorrow’s all around final, for which Black qualified from 2nd place.
